History of suppository
The term suppositorium comes from the Latin word supponere which means to substitute- referring to a dosage via enema rather than orally.
Rectal dosage goes back to antiquity. The Old Testament refers to suppositories made of silver while Hippocrates describes various compositions of rectal forms for dosage.
Early suppository molds were large by comparison to today’s recipes with 5 grams being a common weight and some text describe 8 grams compared to today’s suppositories at 2-3 grams for adults and 1 gram for child.
Bases where often animal tallow, baked honey even soap! thankfully in the late 1800s cocoa butter was the preferred medium with other softer options such as glycerine and gelatin also developed.
Rectal route administration was effectively used throughout the last centuries to deliver drugs both locally ( ie hemorrhoids) and systemically as an alternative to oral delivery .
BASE INGREDIENTS
The traditional suppository base is an oil or butter that is solid at room temperature and that melts at body temperature.
The two main types of bases used are fatty bases -ie oils and butters and water soluble bases ie glycerine/gelatine .
COCOA BUTTER
Cocoa butter is our top recommendation for at home suppository use.
Also called Theobroma oil, is a pale-yellow, edible vegetable fat extracted from the cocoa bean. It is used to make chocolate, as well as ointments, toiletries, and pharmaceuticals. It is brittle when cold but melts slowly at body temperature on contact (ideal)
Cocoa butter typically has a melting point of around 34–38 °C (93–101 °F), This base is solid at room temperature, but melts at body temperature.
